THE PREVIOUS OWNERS hadn’t left much in the way of furniture or appliances. The one thing they did leave was the porch swing. Bailey could tell already that it was going to be one of her favorite places in the house. She sat in it, letting it rock gently while waiting for the furniture truck. Elvis was napping not far away.

“Can’t believe they let the likes of you buy this house,” a portly older gentleman said from the sidewalk. “Maybe kids’ll egg your house from now on.”

“Why Mr. Braddock. I’m honored you remember me,” Bailey said lightly. Ian had told her that one of the neighbors had strongly objected to her presence in the neighborhood. Now she knew who it was.

“Hell raiser,” he scoffed and continued to walk past.

“Don’t mind him. He’s just a bitter old man,” a young woman called from across the street, once the old man was out of earshot.

“That he is,” Bailey agreed easily. She stood up as she saw the truck turn on her road.

“This the Cooper house?” The driver of the truck asked as he pulled to a stop.

“It is. Come on in. Mind the dog. He doesn’t run or bite, but I can’t guarantee he won’t lay right in your path.”

“Duly noted.” He opened the back of the truck. “Where do you want all this?”

“What you got there first?”

“Girl’s room.”

“This way.” Bailey waited until they were close and then directed them upstairs to the room she had mentally assigned to Rebecca and Sarah. “Master is down here and this is the guest room. And if you happen to find the couch it goes downstairs.”

“Not a problem,” the driver assured her. “We’re to put together just the one bed, right?”

“Right. I don’t want to have to sleep on the floor again. Thanks, guys. I’ll be outside if you need me.”

It was a nice day. Since Bailey had no appliances, Mike had loaned her an ice chest. She grabbed a drink and headed back to the porch swing. Elvis was still lying under it, happy to be outside but shaded. She checked his water dish but it was still full. It wasn’t that hot outside.

“You watching the moving show?” Mike asked as he got out his truck. She hadn’t noticed him arrive.

“Yeah. Come have a seat and watch.”

“Thanks. Got any more of that fancy bottled water?” he asked as he walked up the steps to the porch.

“Yeah. I’ll go grab you one.” She walked inside, dodged the furniture guys, grabbed another drink and rejoined Mike on the porch. “So what are you doing here?”

“I can’t come to see my favorite cousin?” Mike asked in mock astonishment. “Okay, I thought you’d want to go get a fridge.”

“Of course. You’re awesome. As soon as these guys are done, I’ll put some shoes on and we can go.”

“Isn’t that Mr. Braddock’s house?” he asked with a laugh.

“It is. And he remembers me.” She laughed. “Apparently he advocated pretty heavily against my buying the house.”

“He’s still an asshole.” Mike shook his head.
